These are some pics my mom took while hanging out with Henry over the last couple of weeks.

5 Months!!!

Daddy's recliner is slippery, but oh so comfy.

Can't wait to play T-Ball!

Henry likes to sit in his Bumbo while Mommy and Daddy have dinner each night. He can't wait to start eating real food.

All smiles. Life is good.

Rolling over is easier and easier every day. Tummy time is much more tolerable. Henry's going to be crawling in no time at all!

Henry turned 5 months on Thursday. He is such a joy! He sleeps through the night most nights (8-9 hours), which is a huge plus during the work week. He just got over his first cold, but he handled it like a champ, not too fussy. He really enjoys sitting in his Bumbo and watching Mom do whatever, from washing dishes, to cooking dinner, to vacuuming, to gardening, to opening mail...well, for about 15-20 minutes and then he wants OUT. He reaches out and grabs things now too, including Mom's earrings and the cactus that sits on the kitchen table (ouch). Baby-proofing my house is definitely on the priority list. He also loves to stand and bounce with assistance. It wouldn't surprise me if he walks before he crawls. His attention span is getting longer by the day. He will now listen to 2-3 short board books in a row. As an avid reader, I am trying to instill a love of reading early, or at least an interest in books. He favorite so far is The Hungry Caterpillar.

As for Mom, I am feeling a little more adjusted to my new normal. I still struggle to find balance between work and the rest of life, but that will probably be a struggle until I retire (or win the lottery...perhaps I should start buying tickets). I've lost 50 pounds since Henry was born, but still can't seem to find the time to run or go to the gym. Perhaps after I'm done nursing I will find some more time. Speaking of nursing, last week I was finally able to retire the nipple shield! I never thought the day would come, but I can now nurse like normal women. Yippee!!! After reflecting about the last 5 months, what I am most grateful for in life, is the invention of grandmas. Both my mom and Ryan's mom have been absolute LIFE SAVERS. Ryan was at MDA camp this week and his mom graciously came over to take care of Henry while I was at work. There are not enough words to express how thankful I am to have family nearby that are willing to help out. It makes going to work so much easier knowing Henry's at home with family that loves him. I love hearing the stories about all the fun they had together while I was away. I wish I could be a baby again!

Weekend fun

Henry loves his Bumbo! Sadly though, his love affair with his bouncy seat has ended.

Play date with Jade on Sunday. Jade was born just a week before Henry. Henry can't wait until he and Jade can plot against the moms. Thanks Shira for spending the morning with us and bring over such yummy Oregon strawberries and cherries!

Tummy time may be tolerable now...but just in small doses. Henry can get his legs moving, then the arms, but the belly stays firmly planted.

Happy Father's Day

Where's the fire? Henry helping Daddy drive the fire engine.

Henry and I visited Daddy yesterday at the fire station for a Dad's Day BBQ. There were probably about a dozen kids running around the station, but Henry was the youngest (and cutest). This was Henry's first of many trips to the fire station.

Four Months Old

Henry can now grasp things in his hands. All smiley for Mommy.

Chubby cheeks...so fun to squish!

Visiting Steven at Camp

Henry and I visited Daddy and Steven at camp on Saturday. Ryan has been Steven's camp counselor for the last 7 years. This year they lucked out and didn't get rained on. I think Daddy was a little home sick, but had a good time nonetheless.

Reflections on Motherhood

Earlier this week, while simultaneously waiting for portraits of Henry to develop, nursing him in the parking lot of an REI and talking on my cell to a high power antitrust lawyer in DC for work, I got to reflecting about my new life as a mother. Multitasking has taken on a whole new dimension!

The love I have for my son grows deeper by the day. I have never been bonded to another human being like I am bonded to him. I never tire of spending time with him. I can't hug, kiss and cuddle him enough. His smile is infectious and his laugh contagious. I'm totally and completely into being a mom. Motherhood is amazing.

Henry will be 4 months old on Tuesday. He now smiles, coos, laughs and squeals regularly. He can grasp things in his tiny hands, like rattles, his stuffed Mickey, and Mommy's hair. He is starting to suck on his thumb or a few fingers rather than his whole fist (although, when he is particularly hungry or tired, the whole fist still gets thrust into to his mouth). He also really likes to stand with assistance and jiggle back and forth (a.k.a. dance). When we go out for walks he now looks around at the world rather than just nestle in for a nap (although usually by the time we return home he is zonked out). He really doesn't enjoy tummy time, so I think crawling and rolling over may come a little later for him (I can't bear to hear him scream on his tummy so his tummy time is limited). I can't believe how much he has grown and developed in just a few short months.

Going back to work was surprising less traumatic than I had anticipated. It has been 5 weeks now since I have returned to work and I think we are starting to get into a groove. The most stressful part of being back at work is juggling the rest of life, like the household chores. The last few weeks though my mom has been helping with some of the chores when she comes over to care for Henry in the middle of the week when both Ryan and I are at work. I never asked her to do this, but she took it upon herself to help out since she knew I was stressed out about the chores. She is a lifesaver. I have the best mom in the world! Speaking of which, it is the sweetest sight in the world to see how bonded she has become with Henry. Although she would say she isn't a kid person, she adores my little man. I couldn't have asked for a better a match. It makes going to work so much easier to know that he is at home with someone who tirelessly loves and adores him, perhaps (almost) as much as I do.
